Trade Corridor Through Port San Antonio Receives Important Support

Dear Friends:
Growing Port San Antonio as a thriving economic engine is a true collaborative effort.
Our success today and bright future ahead would not be possible without support from our customers, public officials and many other stakeholders.
That spirit of community was reaffirmed last week when the Federal Highway Administration approved a $1.7 million grant to support future phases of the 36th Street extension at Port San Antonio.
This road project is of great importance to the Port and the larger San Antonio area. First, it improves connectivity to and from Port San Antonio. Furthermore, the City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department is overseeing two construction phases now underway that will allow us to open 150 acres at Kelly Field next year to build future aerospace facilities.
The new funding will support extending the road further into the heart of the Port. This is the latest milestone in creating a regional trade corridor that includes Highway 151 to improve connections between northwest Bexar County and economic generators to the south, including the Port, Toyota and Texas A&M University-San Antonio.
Port San Antonio would like to thank Congressman Charlie Gonzales, who for years has been a steadfast supporter of our organization and was instrumental in helping secure the latest infrastructure funding.
Sincere thanks are also extended to the Texas Department of Transportation and the City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department, whose support was essential in developing and presenting the successful grant application.
Congressman Gonzales said it best last week: “This funding will increase San Antonio’s economic production, its manufacturing capacity, and it will ultimately result in a tremendous growth in local jobs. This award represents the people of San Antonio’s willingness to come together in order to reinvest in our community and create jobs. Once again, San Antonio has shown itself to be an example of how communities can overcome economic hardships through a commitment to collaboration. Congratulations to everyone involved with this great project.”

Texas, U.S. must fund road infrastructure

If you think road conditions and congestion in Texas are bad now, just wait a couple of years. Texas is a rapidly growing state, adding on average 1,200 new residents every day. Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, who chaired the Transportation and Homeland Security Committee during the last legislative session, warned that the Lone Star State will run out of money for new road construction in 2012.

How to fix crumbling U.S. roads, rails and airways

After more than a decade of declining tax revenue in the United States, highways are crumbling, rail lines are overburdened and airline corridors are congested. Factor in the economic weakness, the public’s tax-cutting mindset and geopolitical instability, and an already shaky situation looks ready to worsen for commerce, jobs and several industries that are crucial for transportation infrastructure.

The public must demand better solutions to traffic

City, state can't afford the cost of doing nothing.
By Jim Reed and Vic Suhm / Special to the Express-News
If the Texas transportation system were a medical patient, the diagnosis would be failing health on the verge of critical condition. Our urban and suburban roadways are like clogged arteries, many of our rural roads and bridges are like brittle bones, and our funding sources are like lungs with little oxygen. Without leadership, neglect of our transportation system will put our economy on life support. <click here to editorial link>

Wolff warns of suburban sprawl "nightmare"

County Judge Nelson Wolff on Tuesday called for a fresh analysis of suburban sprawl and its impact on government services in light of new census data that reflects 23 percent population growth in Bexar County over the past decade.

Wolff said parts of Northwest Bexar County may be headed to a "nightmare" if the area's population continues to grow without an adequate tax base to pay for urban services that are being demanded outside San Antonio's city limits. He renewed his warnings that some unincorporated areas may have to form cities if they expect to have city-style amenities.

Alamo RMA Public Meetings

Yesterday evening as part of the third public meeting hosted by the Alamo RMA for the US 281 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), five alternative scenarios for the US 281 Project (no build, overpass/expansion, overpass/expansion plus widen Blanco & Bulverde Roads, expressway, and elevated expressway) were presented to the public.

Approximately 200 individuals participated in an interactive forum held at the Summit Christian Center.   A wealth of information was presented regarding the five options, including estimated average vehicle speeds on US 281 in 2035 ranging from 5 mph for the no build alternative up to 45 mph for the two expressway options.  The overpass solutions would allow for 20 mph in year 2035.

Comparison information was also provided for each alternative regarding future access for mass transit, maximum number of vehicles per day, number of homes and businesses that could be replaced, right of way that must be acquired, additional impervious cover, number of driveways and side streets that would lose direct access, and related topics.   In this observer’s opinion – a very well organized and presented forum which provided members of the public opportunities for interactive small group discussion and comment on each option.

The PowerPoint presentation with from the hearing is available at www.411on281.com /US281EIS - - and is very much worth viewing.  Members of the public may provide written comments via this website or by email to US281EIS@AlamoRMA.org through Monday, May 10, 2010.
